An Indigenous rapper named ‘Black Poet’ has been sent to jail for 11 months after police found methamphetamine, a pipe and scales in his car.

Paul Thomas Callow, 39, was driving a Mitsubishi Lancer when police randomly pulled him over in Glenfield, Western Australia, on August 31 at 2.55am.

At the time, he only had two months left of an eight-month suspended imprisonment order.

He has also never held a driver’s licence and was disqualified from driving, The West Australian reported.

When police searched Callow they found 0.1 grams of meth in the front of his pants, and the pipe and scales under a car seat.

Senior Constable Beau Jones told Geraldton Magistrate’s Court that Callow admitted to using meth in the 30 minutes prior to being pulled over.

Despite admitting he had ‘a few puffs’, Callow tried to tell police he was ‘holding the drugs and pipe for another person’ but said he did own the scales.

Callow appeared in Greenough Regional Prison via videolink where he pleaded guilty to no authority to drive, possession of meth, and two counts of possessing drug paraphernalia.

Lawyer Xavier Sellathambu told the court that Callow had ‘just come into a new relationship’.

‘He tells me she’s an extremely strong support person for him…She’s been actively helping him try to get off the drugs,’ he said.

Mr Sellathambu told the court that Callow’s partner also had a drug problem but had overcome it, and was willing to help her partner.

Although Mr Sellathambu told the court the 39-year-old had kept out of trouble for six months, Magistrate Chris Miocevich said it was not a mitigating factor.

Magistrate Miocevich said he gave Callow the lenient sentence in February to give him a ‘realistic chance’ at staying out of trouble.

‘All you had to do was not drive for 8 months. I would have told you, at that time, that was your chance, (and) don’t come back again looking for another chance,’ the magistrate said.

‘Unfortunately for you, I don’t think those circumstances do make it unjust to activate that sentence that I imposed back in February.’

Magistrate Miocevish reinstated Callow’s original eight month sentence.
