Real Housewives of Melbourne’s Janet Roach reveals her son Jake inspired her to help burns patients

RHOM star Janet Roach’s son inspired her to start a charity after he suffered third-degree burns to 70 per cent of his body when he was doused in petrol and went up in flames at a 21st party

Real Housewives of Melbourne’s Janet Roach has revealed how her son’s tragic accident inspired her to set up a charity to help burns patients.

In 2011, Jake was accidentally doused in petrol and went up in flames while sitting around a campfire at a friend’s 21st birthday party.

Following his recovery, the mother and son duo set up The Roach Foundation to help burns patients who are unable to afford the treatments Jake received.

‘A very small percentage of people actually survive and we did lose him a couple of times,’ Janet explained on The Morning Show.

‘It started a whole two-year (passage) of treatments and things that he was having and during that time I got online and found some amazing treatments and we experimented, in a way, with them on Jake.’

Janet went on to say Jake was inspired to start a foundation and support other burn patients in hospital.

‘It really makes a difference how you look after burns to get back into your life and to get re-established,’ she said.

‘People say it doesn’t matter how you look. You know, the face that you present to the world, it really does matter to you.’

‘He is quite pushy, Jake, and so we started the Roach Foundation and we treat people that are burns patients, we don’t call them victims, and we do a lot of things, mainly on their aesthetics.’

It has been widely reported that Jake suffered burns to 70 per cent of his body.

In 2015, Janet said around half a million dollars had been spent on treatments for Jake, when speaking to The Daily Telegraph.

Janet and Jake also set up a tea making site called Raw Essentials, as they had noticed that herbal teas benefited Jake during his recovery.
