Real Madrid ‘WILL break their own policy by handing Sergio Ramos a new two-year contract’

Real Madrid ‘WILL break their policy of only offering players over 30 a 12-month extension by handing Sergio Ramos a new two-year contract’… but captain must accept a reduction in wages as giants look to cut costs

  • Centre-back Sergio Ramos’ contract at Real Madrid expires in the summer
  • The 34-year-old is also able to talk to clubs outside Spain in the January window
  • The club have an unwritten rule about only offering one-year deals to over 30s
  • But AS claim Ramos will be an exception once a squad wage cut is agreed to

Real Madrid are set to break their own code by handing Sergio Ramos a new two-year contract, according to reports in Spain.

The 34-year-old stalwart’s deal expires in the summer and he will be free to speak with clubs outside Spain in January.

There is an unwritten rule at Madrid that they only offer players over 30 years old a one year contract extension, but AS claim the LaLiga champions are willing to make an exception for club legend Ramos by allowing him to extend his deal until 2023.

But the report adds that the new contract will only be offered to the Madrid captain once the club have managed to get Ramos and the rest of the squad to agree to a new wage cut.

The club need to mitigate for their current losses amounting to £172million (€190m) due to the loss of matchday income and merchandise sold on those days caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Zinedine Zidane’s men agreed to a 10 per cent wage cut following football’s resumption in the summer, but the report adds the club are now hoping to convince their stars into accepting a 15 per cent and perhaps even a 20 per cent wage reduction.

Just as Cadena Ser revealed, Ramos will therefore not receive a salary increase as and when he is offered the new two-year contract.

The news comes a day after reports claiming that Ramos is demanding a new deal at the Bernabeu to take him through to his 38th birthday.

But speaking after Madrid beat Inter Milan in the Champions League earlier this week, Zidane insisted he believes an agreement will be found with the Spain international.

‘As always, he is our captain, our leader,’ Zidane said.

‘We want him here forever, it is what he is doing, showing that he always wants to. I have no doubt that he will stay and that it will continue to make history.’

Ramos also joined an exclusive club in the club’s 3-2 win against Inter when he scored his 100th goal for the Spanish capital side.

It was his 55th header for the club – on top of 21 penalties, two free-kicks and 22 goals using his feet from open play.

Ramos’ feat is the all the more remarkable considering he is a defender. His glittering career at Real reads 659 appearances, 100 goals and 22 trophies since he joined from Sevilla in 2005.
