Rees-Mogg uses England’s World Cup win to make Brexit jibe as Morgan praises ‘multi-cultural’ team

Jacob Rees-Mogg sparked a row after linking England’s Cricket World Cup win to Brexit as the team’s Irish-born captain Eoin Morgan praised his ‘multi-cultural’ and multi-faith team declaring: ‘Allah was definitely with us’.

The Tory Brexiteer has been lampooned for tweeting: ‘We clearly don’t need Europe to win’ just after Morgan’s team beat New Zealand at Lord’s in the greatest game of cricket in history.

While Eoin Morgan’s words have been widely praised with Piers Morgan saying: ‘Great line from Captain @Eoin16. Brilliantly unifying to see such a diverse England team become World Champions’.

Mr Rees-Mogg’s tweet sparked 8,000 replies with many reminding him that Morgan hails from Dublin and four of the team including heroes Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer were born and raised abroad.

Fellow Tory Ed Vaisey replied: ‘Slightly misjudging the mood there, @Jacob_Rees_Mogg . But while you’re on, the English captain is Irish’.

One critic tweeted: ‘We have an Irish captain, a South African opener, a West Indian fast bowler, and Ben Stokes is born in New Zealand. Our team is a reflection of the diversity and openness of this country. Maybe you should try tapping into that’.

There was a slew of tweets criticising Mr Rees-Mogg’s tweet in the minutes after England’s biggest cricket win

Another said: ‘Jacob Rees-Mogg cannot even resist the temptation of using an English cricket win to make a b****y Brexit point’.

‘I’m a leaver but, at this moment, I’d rather celebrate the team’s achievements than try to make political points from them. The fact that the captain and one of the inspirational figures behind the team is from Ireland probably demonstrates the fallacy behind your tweet too’, another said on Twitter.

Former England footballer Gary Neville expressed his disbelief by tweeting a head-in-hands emoji.

Eoin Morgan used his captain’s press conference last night to praise his diverse team.

Asked whether he had enjoyed ‘the luck of the Irish’ after beating New Zealand in extraordinary circumstances last night, he replied: ‘We had Allah with us as well’.

He added: ‘I spoke to Adil [Rashid], he said Allah was definitely with us. It epitomises our team. We are from quite diverse backgrounds and cultures and guys grow up in different countries. To actually find humour in the situation we were in at times was pretty cool’.

Independent MP Nick Boles praised Morgan’s comments on Twitter, saying: ‘Listen up Boris Johnson and Jeremy Corbyn: this is the spirit of the country you seek to lead.

‘We saw it during the 2012 Olympics and we saw it this summer during #CWC19Final Our country is so much better than either of you.’

Irish premier Leo Varadkar meanwhile tweeted: ‘It’s a wonderful feeling to see an Irishman and Dubliner @Eoin16 lifting the Cricket World Cup. A proud day for all of us. Congratulations Eoin Morgan and England.’

Morgan holds a British passport because his mother was born in Ipswich but grew up in Dublin and played for Ireland – breaking national records – before transferring to England.

Fast bowler Jofra Archer, who bowled England’s victorious ‘super over’, was born in Barbados while Ben Stokes was born in New Zealand, where his mother still lives.

Star opening batsman Jason Roy moved to the UK aged nine with his family from South Africa, where he was born.

Spin bowlers Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali are both devout Muslims.

Last night they celebrated like mad as Morgan raised the trophy – but scattered when the Champagne came out.

Jonny Bairstow proceeded to spray a bottle of sparkling wine over his team-mates.

Quickly spotting what he was about to do, Ali and Rashid ran off the podium in order to avoid getting soaked by the booze.

The duo are devout Muslims, a religion which forbids the consumption of alcohol.

Clearly both Ali and Rashid were ready for the Champagne to be sprayed at some point, positioning themselves on the outskirts of the group.
