‘His legacy lives on in Ramsay Street’: Creator of soap hit Neighbours dies aged 93 – as pop princess Kylie Minogue leads tributes to the ‘pioneer of Australian television’

Reg Watson, the man behind one of Australia’s most popular soap operas, Neighbours, has died.
Tributes from some of Australia’s biggest stars have flooded in after the show’s creator passed away on Saturday aged 93.
Kylie Minogue, who became a household name after starring on the hit series led the tributes which have remembered Mr Watson as a ‘pioneer’ of Australian television.

Mr Watson’s illustrious career in television also includes the creation of other hit series’ like Prisoner and Sons and Daughters
‘Everyone at Neighbours is sad to hear of the passing of our creator, Reg Watson,’ Neighbours’ executive producer, Jason Herbison wrote on Twitter.
‘He was a pioneer of drama, prolific in his output and by all accounts a lovely person to work with. His legacy lives on in Ramsay Street to this day.’
Minogue, who stole the hearts of Australia when she starred on screen as Charlene Robinson, said Neighbours had impacted the lives of millions.
‘What a legacy Reg Watson leaves. For me, and millions of others, Neighbours impacted our lives,’ she tweeted.

‘My thoughts and best wishes to his family and friends.’
Her on-screen husband, Jason Donovan who played the role of Scott Robinson also paid tribute.
‘Many Australian Entertainment careers have a lot to thank for this man. A legend .. Mr Reg Watson,’ he tweeted.

One of the show’s current stars, Colette Mann said she was forever ‘grateful’ for having had the opportunity to work with Watson.
‘I was lucky enough to be cast in two of the great shows created by the brilliant Reg Watson … before the days of the ubiquitous reality boom. I am eternally grateful for his talent and grace,’ she posted.

Growing up in Queensland, Mr Watson began working as an actor at the ripe age of 16.
Neighbours, which has been running since 1985, launched the career of some of Hollywood’s biggest names.
Margot Robbie, Delta Goodrem and Natalia Imbruglia skyrocketed to fame after featuring on the show.
Russell Crowe and Hunger Games star, Liam Hemsworth were among others to appear on the series before finding Hollywood stardom.
