‘Rejoice!’ Former South Carolina first lady Jenny Sanford gets remarried

Former South Carolina first lady Jenny Sullivan Sanford remarried over Easter weekend, nine years after she was left humiliated by her cheating governor ex-husband.

Jenny’s new husband is investment banker Andrew McKay and the wedding took place on Sullivan’s Island near Charleston this weekend, three short months after their engagement.

Mother-of-four Jenny, 55, proudly shared photographs from the happy occasion on Instagram.

She wore an ivory satin gown and furry white shawl. Wearing her hair tied off her face, she accessorized with pearl earrings and a matching bracelet.

‘Rejoice!’ wrote Jenny as she shared a photograph from the wedding with followers.

In the caption for her second photograph, she wrote: ‘Joy in the morning! Sweetest husband ever.’

Among those to congratulate her online was United States Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley.

‘Congratulations! You deserve a life of great love and laughter. We are so happy for you!’ she wrote.

Jenny responded: ‘Thank you!’ and described it as a ‘happy time’.

The couple dated for 15 months before announcing their engagement in January.

It is a second chance at happiness for Sanford who was left devastated in 2009 when her ex-husband Mark, then the governor of South Carolina, admitted to an affair with Argentinian María Belén Chapur.

The confession came in June after a bizarre period of ten days when he was considered missing.

It was referred to as a ‘disappearance’ until he returned to the spotlight to admit he had been in Buenos Aires with Chapur, his lover of one year.

Jenny had been aware of the affair since January that year.

On Sunday, as his ex-wife celebrated her new marriage, Mark Sanford took to Facebook to celebrate the ‘second chance’ he had been given.

After his 2009 announcement, Sanford and Chapur carried on dating and they too became engaged.

He however called off the engagement in 2014, citing his then-ongoing divorce from his wife as the reason for the split.

In a 2,000 word Facebook post which he has since deleted, he claimed the terms of the divorce were so strict that it meant he could not allow his children and fiancee to be around one another.

‘No relationship can stand forever this tension of being forced to pick between the one you love and your own son or daughter.

‘Belen and I have decided to call off the engagement,’ he wrote.

While Sanford was public about his affair, giving a tearful press conference in June 2009, his ex-wife was not.

She said little publicly about his indiscretion and saved her retelling of the experience for her book, Staying True.

In it, she recalled humorously how she argued with Sanford after discovering his affair with him proclaiming: ‘She is not a wh**re!’ The couple has four sons together.
