If your libido has taken a nose-dive of late, it might not be your relationship, but what you eat that could be the problem.

According to Sydney-based love and relationship expert Dr Lurve, all food has a bearing on your mood, energy and emotional state – and some affect these more negatively than others.

Dr Lurve said while eating strawberries or oysters can pep things up in the bedroom, other foods, including takeaways and cheese, can have the opposite effect.

Here, FEMAIL reveals the five foods killing your sex life and why you should be eating peanuts if you want to spark a flame in the bedroom.

1. Cheese

Those who love cheese will be disappointed to know the dairy product – while delicious – isn’t doing anything for your sex drive.

‘Cheese is bad for your sexual appetite as it throws your hormones off balance and will make a fondue out of your sex drive,’ Dr Lurve told Sporteluxe.

Fitness Magazine explains the problem with dairy is lactic acid (a compound found in dairy products) can literally ‘squash’ libido levels.

It revealed foods derived from cow’s milk can also be loaded with synthetic hormones, throwing off the natural hormone production in men and women.

2. Chocolate

Chocolate is one food the mind directly associates with love, however, when it comes to sex you’d to better to avoid it.

Dr Lurve said while chocolate is usually considered an aphrodisiac, it can be a problem because it lowers testosterone in men.

She adds tasty treat also comes packed with methylxanthines  (a type of stimulant), although not one that will help get you in the mood.

3. Takeaway foods

Eating takeaways is more likely to leave you feeling lethargic than in the mood for love (stock image)

There’s nothing more comforting than ordering a food delivery if you can’t be bothered cooking after a hard day at work.

But doing so is unlikely to help get you in the mood with your partner.

This is because these types of foods tend to be laden with fats, so after you’ve eaten them your body is expending all its energy breaking this down.

Dr Lurve also said takeaways are likely to leave you sleepy and lethargic and instead of wanting sex, you’ll be craving a belly rub instead.

What foods should you eat more of to help increase your libido?

1. Eat foods loaded with zinc: Oysters, beef, lamb, pumpkin seeds and fortified cereal.

2. Foods that are high in Vitamin E: Nuts, green vegetables, tomato, mango, kiwi, vegetable oils, margarine and wheat germ.

3. Cholesterol-rich foods: Avocados, nuts, seeds, eggs as well as flaxseed, soy foods and fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel and trout.

4. Add extra Omega 3: Omega 3 fatty acids, such as those found in fish oil capsules, can help a flagging libido raising dopamine levels in the brain that trigger arousal.

5. Include peanuts for extra blood flow: Peanuts are a rich natural source of L-arginine – an amino acid that helps sexual function in men by relaxing blood vessels.

While cruciferous vegetables won't impact your libido, it's worth knowing these foods produce methane

4. Cruciferous vegetables

Asparagus, Brussels sprouts, broccoli and cauliflower all fall under the category of cruciferous vegetables.

While these foods won’t impact your libido per se, they can produce methane (a gas) when consumed.

Dr Lurve recommends avoiding consuming these if you want to ensure there are no unfortunate mishaps between the sheets.

5. Alcohol

There is nothing wrong with enjoying a few drinks with your partner.

However, getting drunk won’t do you any favours in the sex department.

Dr Lurve said when men consume too much alcohol they are more likely to experience erectile dysfunction, whereas women will find it hard to orgasm.

‘Alcohol consumption is easy to get wrong because it doesn’t affect us right away,’ the expert said.

‘We tend to drink more than we should and end up being a little too tipsy to be able to make love or reach orgasm.’
