‘All relationships don’t need work, they deserve work,’ she told the Today show.

‘And it doesn’t have to be work, it can be fun, especially if you’re talking about what turns relationships into passionate relationships.

‘For over a decade, I studied “what makes romance romantic? What is that quality?” And I looked at all the things people do all over the world.

‘I realised there’s five basic things. So I came up with the five pillars of passion.’

BE MINDFUL

‘Your relationship is a thing. It’s an entity that you need to put attention on – and you need to put attention on each other,’ she said.

SHOW AFFECTION

‘Number two, what I call sensate connection,’ she explained.

‘That’s using your senses. So that’s holding your hands, loving and hugging each other… Women need full body touch. And looking at each other in the eyes.’

FIVE PILLARS OF PASSION

  • Be mindful
  • Show affection
  • Practice spontaneity
  • Give verbal appreciation
  • Provide tokens of love

PRACTICE SPONTANEITY

‘Playful adventure,’ Ms Bratton said.

‘The couple that plays together, stays together. Find an adventure, taking your partner to do something.

‘When you move a person, you move their emotions when you move their bodies. So roller-coasters are a little danger… a little safety together is very romantic.’

Other adventurous ideas are row boat, snorkelling and bush walking.

GIVE VERBAL APPRECIATION

‘Erotic communication… Women need to hear that you love them,’ she said.

‘Men are more visual, women are more auditory. We need you to tell us, as much as possible, that you love us.’

PROVIDE TOKENS OF LOVE

‘Declarations of your love,’ she said.

‘So rituals, things that you do together every year. Also, tokens of your love are important. Like gifts. The classics are flowers, jewellery, chocolate and photos.

‘These are sensations. Flowers smell good, perfume smells good, chocolate tastes good – it sensates connection. They are classics because of that.’
