Fuming resident hits back at neighbours with savage note blasting them for using washing machine at 4am – but people aren’t so sympathetic

  •  Reddit user posted a photo of the note he found outside his block of flats
  • Note writer spoke out after neighbor was using the washing machine at 4am
  • They said that the use of the machine at that time was ‘unacceptable’

A fuming resident has hit back at their neighbours with a savage note demanding they stop using their washing machine at 4am.

Earlier this week, an anonymous UK Reddit user posted a picture of the note they found outside their block of flats.

Sharing the feud on the public forum, the person said: ‘This was on the front door to our block of flats – can’t decide whose side I am on. (I am neither the neighbor nor the note leaver).’

The disgruntled typed note begged the neighbors to stop using their washing machine.

It read: ‘Dear neighbors, 4AM is not an acceptable time to use a washing machine. I have been woken up several times with your washing machine. Please stop!’

The sleep deprived individual divided opinions on Reddit, with some agreeing that 4am was too late to be doing washing, whereas others said that they may have been trying to save on bills amid rising energy costs

The anonymous resident argued that it was ‘very unfair’ for their neighbour to continue disturbing other people in their sleep.

They continued: ‘Refrain from using the washing machine before 7am. I have been woken up on too many occasions. This is very unfair when people are working.’

That said, the sleep deprived individual divided opinions on Reddit.

Although some agreed that 4am was too late to be doing washing, others suggested that they may have been trying to save on bills amid rising energy costs.

A user said they might in fact be the neighbor, apologizing and explaining that they just wanted to get their child's school uniform ready

How much does a load of washing cost?

Your tumble dryer and dishwasher are likely to be among the most energy-hungry devices in your home, around 14% of your energy bill, according to the Energy Saving Trust.

Washing a typical 2kg load of clothes uses 0.63kwh, while tumble drying them afterwards uses 2.5kwh – it comes out at just under 22p for the washing, plus 85p for drying, £1.07p per load.

A family that does five loads of washing per week could end up paying more than £278 a year.

Always ensure the machines are full before using, and switch both machines to the ‘eco’ setting: this typically takes longer, but uses cooler water and far less power.

Energy companies have encouraged people to use their washing machine after peak hours, as it costs less to do so.

One said: ‘If her night rate starts at midnight like mine does, she’s probably setting the washing machine to start then to save some money on the electric.’

Another added: ‘Some energy companies charge less for out of hours usage, so might be a factor.

‘Probably an easy fix by adjusting the washing machine feet so the damn thing doesn’t rattle…. Or it could just be someone getting rattled?’

‘I was going to say this,’ a third said. ‘I’ve seen a few companies recently encouraging people to use their machines at night.’

Many flocked to defend the irate note leaver, saying that being woken at 4am is ‘the worst’.

Others said there was no need for the washing machine user to be doing loads at that time, explaining: ‘Even with economy 7 tariff, you could probably start it nearer to normal waking hours — either when just when the rate kicks in, if at 11pm, or just before it finishes if you get it till 8am.’

Another chimed in: ‘Being woken at 6am (or kept awake til 1am) is still better I think. (Unless they’re putting on a big long dry cycle afterwards that takes hours & hours, I suppose).

‘Being woken at 4am where it’s too early to get up but too late to go back to sleep is the worst.’
