Retail giant Target announces the closure of ANOTHER store that will make way for a Dan Murphy’s

  • Parent company Wesfarmers will be closing a total of 167 Targets in Australia
  • Some locations will be turned into Kmart stores while others wont

Another Target is being closed to make way for a bottle shop and supermarket as part of a major restructuring of the retail giant.

Wesfarmers said in a statement the Fulham Gardens Target in Adelaide would close on August 22 and be replaced by a Woolworths and Dan Murphy’s.

The news comes a week after the company announced the closure of 167 Target stores across Australia.

The statement said the restructuring was being done in an effort to make Target ‘more commercially viable’.

‘A number of actions will be taken over the next year to address the unsustainable financial performance of Target and accelerate the growth of Kmart,’ the statement read.

‘Including the conversion of a number of Targets to Kmart stores and the closure of Target stores not suited for conversion.’

Wesfarmers said Target had been a struggling brand ‘for years’ and had been incurring ‘significant losses’ in that time.

‘Its costs are too high, including the cost of operating and supplying a large network of physical stores in regional Australia of varying sizes stocking varying ranges,’ the statement read.

Staff have been assured all efforts will be made to transfer them to other businesses under the Wesfarmers umbrella.

It was previously announced five Target stores across South Australia would be closed and four of them would be converted into a Kmart.

Centre property manager Theo Kaldis told The Advertiser the whole centre would undergo a $10million redevelopment as part of the changes.

A Woolworths spokeswoman told Daily Mail Australia the supermarket chain was looking forward to opening in the new location.

‘We’re very excited about the opportunity to deliver an exciting new Woolworths supermarket to Fulham Gardens to meet the fresh food and grocery needs of local residents,’ the spokeswoman said.

‘We look forward to welcoming customers into our store and will update the local community on our timeline in the coming months.’
