Manchester United splashed out £14.5million to sack Erik ten Hag and his backroom staff, the club’s staggering new financial figures have revealed.

United today released the accounts for the final three months of 2024 and the compensation packages dished out to Ten Hag and former sporting director Dan Ashworth, who spent just 159 days in the job, have been officially confirmed.

A total amount of £10.4m was given to Ten Hag and his coaching staff after their dismissals in October while Ashworth was awarded £4.1m despite his brief spell at the top of the club’s football operation, working under co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

As reported by Mail Sport, United weighed up sacking the Dutchman in the summer, only to perform a screeching U-turn after their surprise FA Cup triumph over Manchester City. His contract was also extended in a show of faith from Ineos.

But after a nightmare start to the season, Ten Hag was eventually shown the door. Assistants Rene Hake, Jelle ten Rouwelaar and Pieter Morel also left, as did club legend Ruud van Nistelrooy after his four-game spell in interim charge.

It has been estimated that United have spent almost £60m on sacking managers and their coaching staff since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013.

Ten Hag departed Old Trafford after guiding United to just three wins from their opening nine matches in the Premier League, while they were also without a win in the Europa League. Ashworth, meanwhile, lasted just five months in his role.

It is understood the former Newcastle recruitment guru shouldered much of the blame for the decision to keep Ten Hag in the summer, while Ratcliffe also took exception to several of his suggestions in the wake of the sacking.

The total cost of hiring and firing him amounted to a shocking £9m.

Ineos have faced fierce criticism for a brutal cost-cutting exercise which has resulted in mass redundnancies and the hiking of ticket prices.
