Arsenal made their return the Champions League in emphatic fashion with a 4-0 win over PSV.
The win came on a night when the club ended a seven-year wait to rejoin Europe’s elite competition.
But eagle-eyed fans will have noticed one particular detail about the evening that stands out as strange.
Since making the move from Highbury in 2006 Arsenal have played at the Emirates Stadium.
But in the Champions League their home ground is simply listed as the Arsenal Stadium due to a little-known UEFA rule.
The Emirates Stadium has been renamed the Arsenal Stadium under UEFA rules
This isn’t just the case for Arsenal as fellow Premier League club Manchester City have also seen their home ground renamed the City of Manchester Stadium.
This is due to UEFA not recognising stadium sponsors under their rules regarding sponsorships.
In fact, UEFA sponsorships rules have also seen teams forced to change their name somewhat.
Austria’s Red Bull Salzburg have seen their name shortened to simply FC Salzburg, and use a modified crest to fit within the regulations.
Arsenal’s triumphant return to the Champions League
Arsenal were rampant in their home stadium against PSV
In the end it was four. It should have been at least double that as the Gunners ruthlessly reacquainted themselves with European football’s elite club tournament with this efficient dismantling of PSV Eindhoven.
This was Arsenal’s first venture back into the Champions League since 2016. Boy did they make up for lost time.
After the long hiatus, you’d forgive supporters for simply being grateful at being back in the big time.
On this evidence – that would be selling themselves short. If this awesome showing is anything to go by then Arsenal will go long into this tournament.
‘It was a beautiful night after such a long time,’ said head coach Mikel Arteta, who once again started David Raya ahead of long-term No 1 Aaron Ramsdale.
‘It was great to hear the Champions League music – we were emotional. I was emotional – but we managed to take the emotion out of it. We were exceptional tonight.’
