Revellers look worse for wear as they watch the sun rise at Bondi Beach

Revellers have continued the party into the New Year after a long night of dancing, laughing and debauchery.

More than a million people gathered around Sydney Harbour to ring in the new year and watch the spectacular fireworks display.

Hundreds of partygoers remained on the streets of Sydney as the sun rose on Wednesday morning, with many struggling to make their way home without a helping hand.

Some were seen looking a little worse for wear after watching the sunrise from Bondi Beach.

One couple were seen sharing a passionate kiss, while others decided to take an early morning dip in the ocean.

A group were still in high spirits and were seen wrestling in the sand. However, not all were in the partying mood.

One man was seen sleeping near the water as his friend climbed over him. Others planned ahead and brought blankets as they slept in the cool beach air.

Party-goers were in high spirits on Tuesday night, with many people seen dancing in the streets once it struck midnight.

Glamorous women in sparkly dresses had ditched their shoes as they ventured home. Some couples were seen sharing passionate kisses, while others were reduced to tears as they awaited their taxis.

It was all too much one blonde reveller who yawned as she and her friends walked through the busy crowds. She looked stunning in her pink frilly dress which she paired with wedge shoes and and a brown bag.

One group of young women chose to dance in the street rather than join a long queue for a nearby bar.

Other party-goers celebrating the new year kicked-off the year with a kiss.

It came as more than 130 fires were still ablaze across NSW, with five at an emergency level.

But some Australians have criticised the extravagant display, saying it was ‘inappropriate’ given the devastation faced by hundreds of families who have lost their homes to bushfires.

One wrote on Twitter: ‘My parents are without power, their town is cut off, and the southerly is blowing another fire towards them. A fireworks show feels like a huge slap in the face.’

Another added: ‘Members of my family are spending tonight huddled together on a boat ramp waiting while bushfires bear down, and our PM is throwing a party.’

Despite the controversy, the midnight display went ahead much to the delight of the thousands of people who camped out all day to see the show.

Sydney locals and tourists alike queued for hours on New Year’s Eve to secure prime viewing positions for the harbour fireworks, with more than one million people descending on the city to ring in 2020.
