Revellers slam smoky London’s New Year’s Eve fireworks display

Britons have complained of difficulties watching the London fireworks display amid claims it was a ‘smoke fest’.

Hundreds have taken to Twitter following the display, which featured more than 12,000 fireworks, to raise concerns about the issue.

Some said it was a ‘blurred smoke fest’ while others claimed the ‘damp air’ caused a lot of problems with visibility.

Another claimed the weather was ‘too good’ for the display, meaning a lack of wind prevented the smoke from being cleared away.

Pictures show smoke enveloping the London Eye during the display, as around 100,000 revellers packed into the streets around Victoria Embankment to watch.

The budget for this year’s display has not yet been revealed – but the New Year’s Eve 2018 display cost £2.3million, and saw £800,000 raised from ticket sales.

Writing on Twitter, Steve Matthews, who appeared to know the creators of the display, said: ‘So gutted for Titanium Fireworks, weather is too good for fireworks and it ended up being a smoke fest.

‘Well done to the BBC for moving the helicopter behind so we can see on TV.’

While another wrote: ‘Did anyone actually see the London fireworks or was the whole cloud of smoke thing just my eyes’.

And another said: ‘Happy New Year everybody but can I just mention I couldn’t see much of the London fireworks through the smoke’.

Hazy Brown added: ‘Were there any fireworks? So much smoke this year in London you couldn’t see the display properly’.

The city’s annual New Year’s Eve fireworks display was sold out, with around 100,000 revellers packed into the streets around Victoria Embankment.

Around 2,000 fireworks set off during the display were fired from the London Eye, with the remainder coming from barges moored in a central location along the River Thames.

The show celebrated London’s role in hosting this summer’s international football tournament, which will take place in countries across the continent rather than being hosted by a single nation – and will see the capital host more fixtures than any other city.

Seven of the competition’s matches are set to be played in the capital, with Wembley Stadium scheduled to host the final and semi-finals.

‘Footballs coming home’ blared out as the Baddiel, Skinner and Lightning Seeds’ favourite accompanied the spectacular show, followed by The White Stripes’ Seven Nation Army and classical hit Nessun Dorma.

The 1990 World Cup theme was played as the city welcomed in 2020 with a dazzling riverside fireworks display, featuring more than 12,000 fireworks.
