This year’s show saw Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg make their debut in the prestigious and coveted role.

Ricky hosted the show in 2010, 2011 and 2012 before handing the over to Tina Fey and Amy Poehler for three years and returning in 2016.

Due to his famously provocative and often offensive jokes, fans soon flooded Twitter to warn ‘snowflakes’ and celebrities of what’s to come.

He said: ‘#RickyGervais returns to humiliate (host) Hollywood celebs as @goldenglobes 2019 announced him as the host… In a world of snowflakery, @rickygervais hosting the Golden Globes has put a smile on my face!…

‘I still watch clips to this day of past ones he’s hosted, nothing will beat the introduction of Mel Gibson!… Fantastic decision’.

Last year, Ricky spoke about feeling ‘jealous’ of Seth Meyers, however confessed his risqué humour would be too perilous given the sensitivities of #MeToo and Time’s Up at the time.

He said: ‘I was jealous of Seth. An amazing year to do it. I mean, it would’ve been the end of my career, but who cares.’
