Ricochet found out Brock Lesnar was squashing him in WWE title match ‘right before we went out’

REVEALED: Ricochet found out Brock Lesnar was squashing him in WWE title match ‘right before we went out there’ and admits he WAS meant to be in The Hurt Business

Ricochet is one of most innovative wrestlers of his generation, but he still hasn’t had it plain sailing on the main roster.

The One and Only was an independent wrestling legend by the time WWE signed him in January 2018.

During his time in WWE’s developmental brand, NXT, the Alton, Illinois export was presented as the special talent he is. Once he was called up, it’s been a bit stop-start.

However, he gained some momentum after being drafted to RAW in 2019 and a year later, he earned himself a title opportunity against Brock Lesnar at Super Showdown in Saudi Arabia. The match only lasted 90 seconds.

Speaking to SportsMail, Ricochet explained he only found out he was being squashed moments before walking though the curtain. ‘It’s crazy. Honestly, probably like right before we went out there,’ Ricochet said.

‘I was kind of just told what we were doing. I had ideas, but at the same time, everything is so flowing and changing. You obviously have ideas, but you know there is a story they are trying to tell, there’s still characters they are trying to build for other things.

‘So there’s a lot of factors that go into it than just the match. I think that’s something that people can forget about, it’s about the future as well.’

‘That match not being exactly what I wanted it to be, I still think there’s opportunity in the future to get back in there with him or someone else.

‘I think there is an opportunity to get back there – whether it’s that match or not – and make it mean more because Ricochet is in a different spot. I think there’s always opportunity, especially someone like me who is capable of anything,’ Ricochet said.

‘Moving forward from his title opportunity, The One and Only would begin feuding with The Hurt Business that would eventually see Cedric Alexander desert him as a good guy and align with the MVP-led stable.’

The storyline dominated much of the rest of Ricochet’s 2020 and he told SportsMail that he was meant to align with the stable to create a supergroup, but WWE changed their minds.

‘I think I was originally supposed to! It was supposed to be like all the original Hurt Business guys, plus me, plus Apollo [Crews],’ Ricochet recalled.

‘It would have been something. But then if you have me and Bobby [Lashley], and Shelton, and Cedric and Apollo and MVP all in a group, who beats that? I honestly think they were maybe like ‘let’s take a couple of people and make it four people.

‘But at first, it was meant to be a big group. I remember them talking to us about it. But then I think, actually the pandemic and stuff happened and instead of me being in the Hurt Business I was just getting beat up by the Hurt Business for six months, but I do think there were talks for me to be in it for a second.’

Ricochet competes at WrestleMania 39 alongside Braun Strowman in the fatal-four-way tag team showcase.
