Rider and horse die after road smash between BMW and cart on south-east London road – as driver, 30, is arrested

  • Met Police said a horse-and-cart driver in his 30s died in this morning’s collision 
  • He was pronounced dead at the scene, on the A2016 Eastern Way, at 9.25am
  • Officers have been trying to find his next-of-kin
  • The driver of the car involved in the collision, a white BMW, was arrested 

A motorist has been arrested on suspicion of death by dangerous driving after a fatal collision with a horse-and-cart driver.

The Met Police said that a man, believed to be in his 30s, who had been driving the cart along the A2016 Eastern Way in Thamesmead, was pronounced dead at the scene at 9.25am today.

The horse was seriously injured in the crash, which occurred at about 8.45am, and had to be put down.

Police officers said that enquiries to trace and inform the dead man’s next of kin are ongoing.

A 30-year-old man who was driving a white BMW car involved in the collision was arrested on suspicion of death by dangerous driving.

He was taken to a police station for questioning, and is not in custody.  

Officers from the Met’s Roads and Transport Policing Command (RTPC) are leading the investigation, and have appealed for witnesses to come forward; in particular, motorists who may have dash-cam footage.
