The 27-year-old woman – who is yet to be identified – had been posing for a photo near the edge at Diamond Bay Reserve, in Vaucluse, before she fell to her death on Saturday morning.

A witness told Daily Telegraph vigilant bystanders tried to resuscitate the fallen woman while others helped her distressed friend, who had taken the photo.

‘The friend needed a couple of men to help her all the way up (the path).’

As police treat the incident as a case of misadventure, tourists were seen flocking back to the dangerous cliff hours after the death.

Diamond Bay is a popular location for selfies, with numerous photos tagged #diamondbay on Instagram snapped from the cliff edge.

Yene Joe, who went to walk on the site hours following the tragic death, said only some parts were known to be dangerous.

‘I only found out someone had died when a woman was yelling at me,’ she said.

The Waverley Council said in June this year it would crack down on visitors risking their lives at Diamond Bay for the perfect picture.

Measures such as more CCTV or rangers have been considered.

Though local Michael Hyams said council had been dragging its feet on the matter.

‘We all could see a tragedy like this happening but Waverley Council seemed to move at a pace that lacked understanding of the gravity of the situation.’

Daily Mail Australia is not suggesting the woman who fell from the cliff face had breached any of the barricades set up along the track.

A police source said officers were investigating whether the woman had fallen from the rock or from along the path.

Police said an investigation into the incident is underway and a report will be prepared for the coroner.

The family of the deceased woman is understood to have been notified.
