Roger Federer’s kit stop at Uniqlo in Wimbledon causes a tailback as police control excited fans

New socks please! Roger Federer’s kit stop at a Uniqlo store in Wimbledon causes a mile-long tailback as police are called to control excited fans

  • He popped into Uniqlo with his wife Mirka, bringing the high street to a standstill
  • There was a mile-long tailback from Wimbledon Broadway to Wimbledon Village

If Roger Federer thought he could get away with a discreet spot of shopping to stock up on kit before Wimbledon gets started, he was sadly mistaken.

When he popped into a branch of fashion chain Uniqlo with his wife Mirka, it brought the high street to a standstill.

Fans crowded round the shop for a glimpse of him and a mile-long tailback built up from Wimbledon Broadway up to Wimbledon Village.

One onlooker said: ‘It was chaos… people just ditched their cars and rushed over.’

Police helped get the traffic moving and escorted Federer, 37, back to his car – though he stopped to talk to fans and pose for pictures.

Uniqlo sponsors Federer and closed the store so the couple could have a private visit – though whether they actually had to pay for very much wasn’t clear.
