Roger Maris Jr. deems Aaron Judge the ‘CLEAN HOME RUN KING’ after the Yankees outfielder hit home run No. 62, as son of former record holder snubs Barry Bonds and Mark McGwire

Roger Maris Jr. has used Aaron Judge’s record-breaking home run as a chance to express his opinion on baseball’s doping history, as he deemed the Yankees slugger the ‘new clean home run king.’

Judge hit his 62nd home run of the season on Tuesday night vs. the Rangers, breaking the previous AL record of 61 held by Maris Jr.’s father, Yankees great Roger Maris.

However, the question of the overall single-season record remains a more contentious one, as Judge trails Barry Bonds (73) and Mark McGwire’s (70) single season marks, though the pair have admitted to using steroids.

Judge’s 62 home runs also trail Sammy Sosa’s 64, who was named in a 2009 New York Times report as having tested positive in 2003, though the former Cubs player denies ever taking performance-enhancing drugs.

Nonetheless, it was clear what side Maris Jr. stood on after Judge broke the AL record on Tuesday night.

‘Congratulations to Aaron Judge and his family on Aaron’s historic home run number 62! It has definitely been a baseball season to remember. You are all class and someone who should be revered,’ he said on Twitter.

‘For the MAJORITY of the fans, we can now celebrate a new CLEAN HOME RUN KING!!’

Maris Jr.’s opinion mostly drew backlash, as Bonds and McGwire thrived in an era that was rampant with steroid use.

‘Bonds is the KING! Hit 73 bombs in 100 less [at-bats] then Judge! Come one! That’s when baseball was fun!’ one fan said.

‘This you hypocrite?’ another asked alongside a photo of Maris Jr. embracing McGwire.

However, some also seemed to side with the son of the Yankees legend.

‘I was thirteen when your dad hit his 61st; In my opinion, the true home run record that stood until just now,’ another fan said

‘If it had to be broken, I’m thrilled that someone like Judge was able to do it. He and your dad deserve nothing but respect…’

Judge and the Yankees will begin postseason play next week after wrapping up the regular season on Wednesday.
