Rolls-Royce lead funeral procession of scrap dealer father

Five Rolls-Royces carrying huge floral wreaths designed to look like chocolate bars led a funeral procession for a ‘very loved’ father-of-five from the travelling community who died at the age of 35. 

Hundreds of mourners turned out to Morriston Crematorium in Swansea, some travelling from as far as Scotland and Ireland, for the service of scrap metal dealer Steven Gilheaney, 35, who died after collapsing at the end of January.

Five silver phantom Rolls-Royces led the funeral procession, and doves were released as part of the service.

Mourners also sang traditional travellers’ songs at the graveside.

The former pupil of St Joseph’s Primary was born in Morriston, and had lived at Swansea ‘s permanent traveller site behind Morganite on the Enterprise Zone. More recently he was based in Pyle.

His sister Mary said: ‘Steven was a very loved person. He was a big part of the travelling community and was very happy-go-lucky’.

Floral tributes included depictions of chocolate, reflecting his sweet tooth, and trucks, which he used to drive.

There was also a pair of floral boxing gloves. Mr Gilheaney used to box in Bonymaen, in the same gym as former world champion Enzo Maccarinelli.

His mother, Mary Gilheaney, said: ‘A lot of people knew Steven. He was a very loving, very caring family man.’
