Romanian man arrested after Vietnamese boy is found inside suitcase

  • Boy was found in a suitcase as border patrol searched the boot of a Skoda
  • Victim taken to hospital in a critical condition but he has since pulled through
  • Andrei Iancu, 20, from Buzau in Romania, arrested and will appear in court later 

A Romanian man will appear in court today charged with people smuggling – after a Vietnamese child was found seriously ill inside a suitcase at the Port of Dover.

Andrei Iancu, 20, from Buzau, was arrested when the boy, thought to be aged 16 from south-east Asia, was discovered by border officials who searched a car boot.

The teenager was taken to hospital in a life-threatening condition following the discovery by UK Border Force officials at about 8.30pm on Wednesday.

His condition has since improved and he is likely to survive, according to Kent Police.

A Romanian man has been arrested after 16-year-old Vietnamese boy was found inside a suitcase at the Port of Dover 

The suitcase the boy was in was found in the boot of a silver Skoda Octavia stopped at the inbound search area of the port, for vehicles arriving in the UK from France.

Kent Police is investigating the incident and the Crown Prosecution Service has authorised a charge against Andrei Iancu, 20, from Buzau in Romania.

He is accused of attempting to smuggle a person into the UK.

Mr Iancu is currently in custody and due to appear before Medway magistrates in Chatham, Kent today.
