Romelu Lukaku has sought to appease furious Inter fans for his decision to leave Italy for Chelsea this summer, as the £97.5million man admitted the Serie A champions ‘got me out of the s***’ when he was at Manchester United.

Inter fans have expressed their anger with Lukaku following his return to Stamford Bridge. The Nerazzurri offered the Belgian a lifeline in 2019 following his misery at Old Trafford and supporters are upset that the 28-year-old has not repaid that faith.

Fans of the Italian giants defaced a mural of Lukaku last month with the words ‘sell out traitor’, with supporters still disappointed that he chose to leave despite previously maintaining that he would stick around.

And Lukaku has sought to defuse tensions between himself and Inter supporters by insisting that he is grateful for the opportunity Inter offered him two years ago, but that Chelsea’s interest in him was a head-turner.

‘I only realized that Chelsea were serious when they made their third offer,’ Lukaku told HLN

‘First they offered €100m (£85m). Then €105m (£90m), €105m plus [Marcos] Alonso. Then they offered €110m (£94.2m) plus [Davide] Zappacosta, but Inter said no.’

‘I didn’t want to go behind Inter’s back. They got me out of the s***. I was in a deep hole at Man United.

‘After training I went to [Simone] Inzaghi’s office. I didn’t want to ruin the atmosphere because I was no longer with my head in Milan. So I asked him: please find an agreement.’

Lukaku’s latest revelations comes after he begged Inter fans to understand his decision to move back to Chelsea, where he was not afforded enough game time to prove his quality at Stamford Bridge.

‘Dear Inter fans, Thank you. Thank you for loving me as one of your own. Thank you for making me and my family feel at home in Milan,’ he wrote on Instagram.

‘Thank you for the unconditional support and love on a daily basis. Thank you for motivating me even more after the first season.

‘When I came to Inter, I immediately felt that I would do well for this club.

‘The love and reception I first received at Malpensa airport was the start of a beautiful story. I made it my mission to never let you down every time I wore the Inter shirt.

‘I gave 100% in every training session and every game so that I could make you proud.’

He went on to add: ‘I hope you guys understand my decision to move on to Chelsea.

‘It’s a chance of a lifetime for me and I think at this time of my career it is a chance that I always dreamed of.’

Inter ultra group Curva Nord had written a message to Lukaku on Facebook that read: ‘Dear Lukaku, we expected more honest and transparent behaviour from you.

‘But, despite the fact we protected you like a son, like one of us, you too proved yourself to be just like all the rest, going to your knees for money. We wish you the best, even if greed doesn’t always pay.’
