The 28-year-old was shown walking out and talking to defender Trevor Chalobah, who scored his first senior goal for Thomas Tuchel’s side in their 3-0 victory over Crystal Palace.

Lukaku was close to Chalobah’s older brother, Nathaniel, during his first stint at the club from 2011 to 2014.

He told Chelsea’s official website: ‘I was speaking with Nate the other day after his brother scored. I got so emotional when his brother scored man. It got to me.’

The striker’s return to Stamford Bridge comes after seven years having played for Everton, Manchester United and Inter Milan.

Chelsea will be hoping he can make a similar impact to the one he did at Inter, having scored 24 goals to fire them to the Serie A title.

He missed their opener against Crystal Palace as he had to quarantine after his arrival into the country.

Lukaku is expected to immediately take his place in Chelsea’s attack from their away trip to the Emirates, with Thomas Tuchel planning to build his forward line around the Belgium international.

Tuchel said after the game with Crystal Palace: ‘We will prepare him to be ready for Arsenal and hopefully he can be on the pitch.

‘We got the number one striker in and we want to have him on the pitch. This is very clear. When you do a transfer of this volume we are absolutely sure we want to have him on the pitch.

‘I think he will take pressure off the shoulders of Kai [Havertz], Timo [Werner] and Christian [Pulisic] because Romelu is the kind of personality to take responsibility and I think he will lift the pressure off the young guys’ shoulders.’
