Rooney Mara oozes gothic glamour in striking jumpsuit

As a couple of more than a year, they are undoubtedly happy to be blazing the promo trail for their latest movie.

And Rooney Mara and her co-star boyfriend Joaquin Phoenix certainly looked the picture perfect pairing as they appeared at the special screening for Mary Magdalene held at London’s National Gallery on Monday evening.

The stunning star, who takes the titular role, was a vision in a strapless black jumpsuit with a fussy lace trim while her boyfriend boasted his trademark dishevelled look on the red carpet alongside their fellow superstar cast members.

Rooney looked sensational as she dazzled in the chic one-piece which made the most of her lithe frame and stunning good looks.

Her alabaster complexion was boldly contrasted against the jet black hue of her ensemble, which also acted to complement her raven tresses.

Ensuring the look was thematic, she opted for a gothic cosmetic look, with smouldering black eyeshadow highlighting her almond shaped peepers.

To allow her outfit to do all the talking, Rooney absolutely no accessories to let her stunning frame and chic ensemble stand out the most.

In his typical style, Joaquin cut an edgy figure as he sported a suit yet opted to keep his tie loose while also sporting a thick beard.

Throwing her support behind the movie was Sarah Ferguson who was showing off her svelte frame in a chic black dress with a leather trim.

The 58-year-old former royal wore her trademark flame-red tresses in a half up-half down style with the top teased into a coiffed beehive.

The director of this film is Garth Davis, who also helmed the 2016 awards show contender Lion headlined by Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman.

Joaquin told Bret he came aboard the project because ‘I was looking for something meaningful. I was looking for an experience. I was friends with Rooney.’

Mary Magdalene will also, of course, feature apostles, including Chiwetel Ejiofor as Peter, Charles Babalola as Andrew, Tawfeek Barhom as James, Zohar Shtrauss as John, Michael Moshonov as Matthew and Tahar Rahim as Judas.

Theo Theodoridis will play Lazarus, and Ryan Corr will portray a man called Joseph.

Considering Ryan is 29 – a good deal younger than Joaquin – it is likely he is playing Joseph Of Arimathea rather than the husband of Christ’s mother Mary.

The Daily Mail’s Baz Bamigboye reported of the movie that Helen and Philippa capture Mary of Magdala, the village on the shore of the Sea of Galilee where she was raised, as a strong, soulful woman who is seen helping a sibling who is giving birth, and tending nets on the shore.

Although there’s no record of her parentage or marital status, the film shows her fighting against the rigid conventions of the day.

She breaks from her close family when she hears a sermon by Jesus, whom she initially refers to as ‘that man’.

Mary is transfixed by the charismatic leader, portrayed — with a sense of awe — by Joaquin.

But her family is startled by her behaviour and believe her to be possessed. In one gripping scene, she’s dragged from her bed and her brother plunges her into the sea, chanting: ‘Leave her, leave her,’ in an exorcism to rid her of her demons.
