Rory McIlroy drinks from Ryder Cup trophy as Europe celebrate victory

Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose and the rest of the victorious European Ryder Cup team have been captured wildly celebrating their win in a raucous party on Sunday night.

Francesco Molinari delivered the winning point for Europe in his singles match with Phil Mickelson – his fifth win from five matches over the weekend – with the final score ending 17½-10½ at Le Golf National.

Chaos ensued afterwards at a lavish party at a nearby venue with most of the team drinking from the trophy, Justin Rose dancing with pop star Niall Horan and Thomas Bjorn’s squad belting out ‘American Pie’.

The evening was captured on Instagram by Radio 1 DJ Nick Grimshaw. A friend of Tommy Fleetwood’s wife Clare and the godfather to her two sons from a previous marriage, Grimshaw filmed the scenes from behind the decks.

Clare could be seen enjoying the evening as she danced around with the lid of the trophy on her head before handing it to Grimshaw to do the same.

Players and their partners then started to do the conga as they paraded around the tables in the packed lavish room.

Captain Thomas Bjorn led the wild scenes after overcoming the odds against what was on paper arguably the US’ strongest Ryder Cup team. He was filmed singing ‘American Pie’ along with the rest of the team in a dig at their opposition.

Ryder Cup rookie Fleetwood won four of his five matches in France and he took his great form into the celebrations, partying wildly with his colleagues as he sipped from the cup.

Francesco Molinari – who became the first ever European player in Ryder Cup history to win all five of his matches – was pictured soaking up the celebrations by the side of the stage.

Rose completed a memorable week on Sunday after he also claimed a massive payday at the Fedex Cup in Atlanta seven days before.

The former US Open champion was seen dancing with former One Direction member Horan, who is also a keen golf fan and has been supporting the team all weekend.

The party went into the early hours of Monday morning with captain Bjorn posting a photo of himself lying on his bed with the trophy and the caption: ‘When you need to go to bed but you don’t want to let go!’.

Europe went into the final day 10-6 up but Bjorn’s men punished the United States even more, pushing on for a remarkable victory come Sunday evening.

All 12 members, including five rookies, won at least a point over the course of the three days and after victory was confirmed the Europeans exploded into celebration after Phil Mickelson struck his tee shot on the 16th hole into the water.
