Roseanne Barr’s daughter has opened up about her traumatizing teen years being raised by foul-mouthed comedian and blue-collar TV queen, who shipped her off to mental health facilities and reform schools for ‘acting out.’
Jenny Pentland, 45, revealed she was sent to multiple reform schools, psychiatric institutions and even a wilderness boot camp between the ages of 13 and 18 in an interview with People that was released on Wednesday.
‘I was locked up,’ she told the magazine.
Pentland, who has since patched up her relationship with her mom and dad Bill Pentland, goes into greater detail in her soon-to-be released memoir, This Will Be Funny Later.
Barr’s daughter said she was sent away in response to ‘acting out,’ which she attributed partially to the pressures that came with her mother’s sudden success and fame from the iconic self-titled sitcom Roseanne.

Between the ages of 13 and 18 she was sent to multiple reform schools, psychiatric institutions, and even a wilderness boot camp as she said: ‘I was locked up’
She says her parents sent her to a series of facilities it was recommended by education and behavioral experts.
She said: ‘I was getting bad grades, and I was mouthy, cutting my arms and smoking cigarettes. Just depressed.’

Pentland also claims that her older sister had also been sent to a psychiatric hospital in Los Angeles for stealing Barr’s car for a joyride.
She explained: ‘I think there was a fear of us spiraling out of control.’
Pentland said that she witnessed and experienced emotional or physical abuse at several of the facilities she was sent to and struggled with PTSD later.
Though all those facilities had since been closed or are under new ownership, she said ‘the worst abuse I feel I suffered was having my free will removed — the lack of freedom.’
She is hoping that her openness regarding her teen experiences will help raise awareness about such problematic programs.
Pentland explained: ‘These places are still out there and I want it to stop. I don’t think about what I’ve lost anymore. I think about what other people are losing right now or what they’re going to lose if it doesn’t change.’
Things have definitely improved in her life as she is married to a man named Jeff as they have five sons together: Eitan, 21, Cosmo, 16, Otis, 14, Buster, 12, and Ezra, 18 months.
She also said that she now has a good relationship with both of her parents.

Barr subsequently said that she was under the influence of Ambien – an sedative used to treat insomnia – and was unaware that Jarrett is Black.
The show was later replaced as The Conners, with Barr’s character killed off from an overdose.
Pentland’s memoir This Will Be Funny Later is set for release on Tuesday, January 18.
