And Warne is emerging as a candidate for the vacancy at Oakwell following an impressive start to the season at Rotherham in League One.

Rotherham are third in the table, just three points adrift off leaders Wigan – but they are facing a fight to keep Warne, who has been in charge since 2016.

Upon his decision to axe Schopp, Barnsley chief executive Khaled El-Ahmad said: ‘On behalf of everyone at Oakwell, I would like to thank Markus for the last few months and wish him well for the next step in his career.

‘Inwould like supporters to know that the process for finding a suitable replacement is under way and we will announce a new appointment in due course.’
