The Grinch who stole Christmas has nothing on porch pirates looking to get their hands on holiday deliveries – with 31 percent of Americans reporting a package getting nabbed during the festive season.

A study conducted by C+R Research asked 2,000 consumers about their experiences online shopping in the last 12 month.

Some 56 percent of respondents also said that they know someone who has had a package stolen while another 31 percent said that their neighbor has had a package stolen.

Of the people who reported having a package stolen at least once, 22 percent shared that they had items stolen twice while 10 percent said that three of their packages had been stolen. 

While there were only three percent of respondents who had four packages stolen, nine percent of those taking the survey reported having five packages taken.

Most Americans who reported having a package stolen said that they contacted the seller (83 percent) while several study participants said they contacted the delivery service (60 percent) or their neighbors (48 percent)

Americans are spending on average $109 to replace items that are stolen while shelling out on average an additional $191 to take preventative measures for package theft.

These measures consist of: buying a doorbell camera (25 percent) or other camera (19 percent), installing motion lights (17 percent), adding a dog to the family (10 percent), putting up a fence/gate (five percent) and purchasing an Amazon smart key (four percent).

47 percent of those respondents expressed worry that they would have package stolen while another 42 percent shared that they would avoid buying expensive items online. 

The holiday spirit won’t be spoiled by porch pirates, with 50 percent of Americans willing to stay home to wait for their deliveries and another 32 percent going shopping in-store. 

In-Store pick-up is also a popular option for Americans (31 percent) while requiring a signature is also a precaution used by shoppers during this season (26 percent). 

Some folks will even have their deliveries shipped to their jobs (14 percent) while others will send their packages to friends or relatives (12 percent).
