And the cheese led to a meltdown between remainers and leavers who went to war on social media.

The row erupted on Facebook after Hig Vas took a posted a picture of Brexit Blue for sale at the Open Market.

She said: ‘How distasteful. I won’t be serving this on my table, nor the two thirds of of Brighton residents who voted Remain. Shame on you the cheese shop at the Open Market.’

Rachel Nomade responded: ‘I pity EU if your post is not a joke. So you won’t support a local shop, for local people because they have a sense of humour during difficult times?’

Jason Ross replied: ‘Not really THAT rude though, c’mon. Brexit Blue? Most likely means that the producer is actually SAD that we are leaving Europe. It’s a f**king lump of cheese. Not a racist flag waving from your mast.’

Holly Joy said: ‘Could it be that the makers of this cheese are anti-Brexit?! Either way… I’d not encourage boycotting a local shop over it even though I’m very anti-Brexit. It’s a comical cheese name!’

Leon Joseph quipped: ‘I don’t think they’ll give Edam if you don’t buy it, even if it grates on you.’

While Matthew Abbott said: ‘I so need to buy this now and eat it on my English crackers. Every bite will be better knowing that it offends someone.’

Brexit Blue, which costs £16.99 a kilo, is produced by GM Boyer of Camberwell in London and being stocked by Ovett and Sons at the Open Market in Brighton.

Hig Vas later said: ‘I feel very sad about Brexit and how it is destroying the lives of many Europeans I know, including family. I did not find it was appropriate to sell a cheese named Brexit even if its Blue.’
