Roxy Jacenko stepped out in Sydney’s CBD on Wednesday wearing a terry cloth bath towel around her waist.

The 44-year-old ‘It Girl’ wore the black version of Balenciaga’s AU$1,400 ‘towel skirt’, which made headlines for all the wrong reasons in 2023 when it first appeared on the Paris Fashion Week runway.

Roxy paired the short black towel, wrapped around her slim frame, with a form fitting cropped black T-shirt and a pair of classic high heels.

She sported her usual gleaming head of blonde highlights and a fresh spray tan, toting a laptop and car keys under one arm as she stopped to commemorate the look with an elevator selfie.

‘The “towel skirt,”‘ she captioned photos alongside laugh-crying emojis, as she poked fun at the fashion oddity.

Nevertheless, Sydney’s most recognisable PR guru took the towel skirt for a bold road test in the heart of the city at lunch time, as she treated her social media agency employees to a Hump Day feed at the re-opened Golden Century restaurant.

The Towel Skirt debuted in Balenciaga’s Spring 2024 collection.

The terry cotton couture is a knee-length number that features two waistline buttons and an adjustable belt built into its interior.

Vogue staffer Julia Hobbs trialled the original beige ‘towel skirt’ at the fashion bible’s London office for a day and waxed lyrical about the objectively stupid item.

‘If the towel skirt is to be read as a comment on our times, my sense is that it hints at a modern human desire to linger in the chrysalis phase of our day—those moments before we are confronted with the news, the emails, the noise,’ she wrote.

‘Swaddled in a bath towel, we get to suspend the outside world a while longer.’

But take away the adjustable belt on the inside, and the two buttons at the waistline, and it is exactly the same as the bath towel in your linen cupboard.

‘Someone could see the beauty,’ Roxy mused as she captioned a close up snap of her skirt with a face-palm emoji, showcasing the incredibly subtle designer logo draped over her trim legs.

The Sweaty Betty founder is well known for her love of splashing cash on designer threads and outrageous items.

Over at balenciaga.com, it is listed as dry clean only, which might raise a few eyebrows at the counter of your local dry cleaners.

It’s also described as ‘regular fit’, and will, therefore, hug the body like all the towels at home.

The Spanish fashion house has trolled the fashion set many times, infamously releasing the Croc high heel, the Lays chip handbag, and ‘distressed’ (i.e. fake broken) sneakers.

So adding a clasp to a bath towel and slapping an eye-watering price tag on it shouldn’t have come as a shock— and yet — it became an instant global sensation.

And if there’s one thing Roxy adores more than an outrageously expensive accessory, it’s executing a buzzworthy moment.
