And EastEnders left fans laughing with a hastily-filmed scene on Tuesday which saw Linda Carter gush about the new royal baby.
The scene saw Linda bore mother-in-law Shirley with her views on the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s third child, which was welcomed into the world on Monday morning.
Thrilled: EastEnders made a last-minute nod to the royal baby on Tuesday as Linda Carter gushed about the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s new arrival
The 30-second scene saw Linda (Kellie Bright) chatting with Shirley (Linda Henry) about whether the new royal baby was the right weight, while also paying tribute to the little one’s late grandmother Princess Diana.
She said: ‘8lb 7oz, that really is a healthy weight, isn’t it? If he’s got his daddy’s smile and mummy’s hair he’ll be perfect!
‘Makes me wanna cry! Diana, a grandma again, all that joy she’s missing out on.’
Sadly the royal baby was far from joyous news for Shirley, who moaned: ‘Linda why are you talking to me about this, I don’t care?’
Delighted: Prince Williams and Kate Middleton announced the arrival of their third child, a boy, two hours after his birth on Monday morning, but are yet to reveal the name
‘I don’t care!’ Meanwhile Shirley Carter told Linda she wasn’t interested in any news about the royal baby
Demanding son Mick (Danny Dyer) take her place, Linda continued her chat about the yet-to-be-named baby Cambridge as the brief scene ended.
Fans took to Twitter after the humorous scene to praise producers for keeping on top of current issues, while others joked that Shirley’s reaction perfectly summed up the hard-as-nails character.
One wrote: ‘As if I didn’t love Shirley enough already, her complete contempt for the whole #royalbaby thing makes her my new favourite character.’
Another added: ‘Wait, so they’re already talking about the #royalbaby? Lol. The writers are doing the most to be relevant/up-to-date!’
Hilarious: Fans of the BBC soap rushed to Twitter to praise producers for being on top of current issues, while others joked about Shirley’s typical reaction to the news
This isn’t the first time EastEnders has slotted in an emergency scene to represent the latest in royal news, as Kathy Beale excitedly gave Shakil Kazemi a drink on the house as she beamed with excitement in November after hearing of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s engagement.
Prince William and Kate Middleton announced the birth of their third child on Monday two hours after the tot was born, but are yet to reveal the name.
Kate was spotted leaving the Lindo Wing of St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington on Monday evening just hours after giving birth, as the couple returned to their home in Kensington Palace.
Between a rock and a hard place: Meanwhile Mick Carter was also left to listen to Linda gush about the royal baby, saying it was the perfect weight for a little one
