This terrifying advert shows a jungle spider crawling across a Royal Marine’s face in an effort to show the poise and endurance required of new recruits.

The 60-second video, entitled Spider, shows the huge arachnid creeping up on the Marine before climbing on his cheek.

Despite the tarantula’s terrifying approach, the Marine remains completely still in a sign of what recruits must be prepared to face to make their missions a success.

The advert was filmed with real Royal Marines Commandos in a bid to make the clip as ‘authentic’ as possible, according to the Forces Network.

In the video the spider, as large as the man’s hand, slowly creeps across jungle leaves towards the Marine holding a gun.

The ice-cold man keeps his focus, looking straight ahead and not even shutting his eyes despite the creature’s advance from his ear to his nose.

A voiceover says: ‘Stealth is vital to any hunter. The decisive move must be delayed until the last possible moment.

‘Whatever the urge to break cover, it must be ignored. No sounds, no sudden movements. Just relentless focus.

‘You can be more than you ever thought possible. All a Royal Marine does is change what he thinks is possible’.

The advert finishes with the slogan: ‘It’s a state of mind. You may already have it.’

WCRS, the agency who made the advert said: ‘The latest spot dramatises that to master stealth, one of the Royal Marines’ major skills, you must learn to override your natural instincts and remain completely calm, even in the presence of danger.’

One Twitter user called Nicole said: ‘Just a heads up if you are phobic with spiders…. Don’t watch the new Royal Marines ad! Honestly freaked me right out!’

Another called Jordan said: ‘Why has the new Royal Marine advert got a massive tarantula crawling across the screen the whole time?? Some of us are scared of spiders.’
