Royal Opera House is evacuated over suspicious package

  • Crowds were moved away from area as police investigated the ‘suspect package’
  • The Metropolitan Police has since confirmed the incident has been ‘stood down’ 

London’s Royal Opera House was evacuated and the surrounding area cordoned off this morning after reports of a ‘suspicious package’.

People were moved away from the area by police and images posted on Twitter showed crowds of people waiting to be allowed back when the scene was declared safe. 

One witness nearby told MailOnline the evacuation was prompted by reports of a suspicious package at the Royal Opera House, and police with sniffer dogs were seen near the building.

The Metropolitan Police has since confirmed the incident has been ‘stood down’. 

A Met Police spokesman told MailOnline officers responded to reports of a ‘suspect package’. 

The Royal Opera House tweeted: ‘The Royal Opera House was evacuated this morning along with other businesses in the area. 

‘The situation is now resolved with staff and artists returning safely to the building.’
