Ruby Rose faces backlash after donating to LGBTQ victims

Orange is the New Black star Ruby Rose has faced enormous backlash after donating $10,000 to Hurricane Harvey’s LGBTQ victims.

The 31-year-old was swiftly bombarded with abuse by social media users who accused her of singling out one group to help when there were many people in need.

The actress replied to a tweet from Lena Dunham’s boyfriend Jack Antonoff, in which she said: ‘I’m going to match Jack and eat a banana while I donate 10 k to the LGBT center in Houston also.’

Antonoff initially tweeted: ‘I’m going to match donations up to 10k to the montrose LGBT center in houston for harvey relief PLEASE donate.’

The reason Ruby joked back about eating a banana whilst donating is because Antonoff received flack at the VMA’s on Sunday for eating a banana during Katy Perry’s monologue.

Some Twitter users say it was a way of him throwing shade at Perry to show his loyalty to Taylor Swift amidst their ongoing feud.

One social media user wrote: 'This is sad... helping only one group. When the entire city needs help'

One Twitter user wrote: ‘Jack Antonoff bored and eating a banana during Katy Perry’s intro is all of us watching this intro. #VMAs’

Meanwhile, Ruby’s response to Antonoff sent many Twitter users into a frenzy as they questioned why she would make such a decision.

One social media user wrote: ‘This is sad… helping only one group. When the entire city needs help.’

Another very angry user posted: ‘So you are only willing to help out gay people suffering from the floods in Houston?!?! You are a disgusting human being.’

The actress, who is dating singer Jessica Origliasso, certainly didn’t take the criticism lying down.

She responded to some of the tweets.

‘I don’t agree with the wording or personal attacks but I can understand the confusion if you are not aware of what these centers do,’ the star posted next to an image containing more detail about the organization.

Ruby is one of the many celebrities stepping up to donate money to the Hurricane Harvey victims.

On Wednesday Sandra Bullock donated $1 million to the American Red Cross.

‘There are no politics in eight feet of water, there are human beings in eight feet of water,’ she said in a statement, according to People.

Additionally, socialite Khloe Kardashian said her celebrity family was donating $500,000 to the Red Cross and the Salvation Army.

She was responding to a challenge set by comedian Kevin Hart, who on Tuesday said he was donating $25,000 and named celebrities whom he urged to follow suit.

In response, pop star Jennifer Lopez and her boyfriend, baseball legend Alex Rodriguez, in a joint Instagram post said that they were each donating $25,000.

One of the most successful fund-raising efforts has come from football player J.J. Watt, a local transplant who plays for the Houston Texans.

After his online appeal quickly met his goal of raising $500,000 in donations, he repeatedly upped the challenge. By Wednesday he had raised $6 million and was seeking $10 million.

Hurricane Harvey is expected to be the costliest natural disaster in U.S. history, with its impacts currently estimated at $160 billion.
