The 23-year-old’s shock decision follows Jarryd Hayne, who made an unsuccessful transition in 2015 before he returned to the NRL in 2017.

Holmes had been touring NFL clubhouses in the US during the NRL off-season, according to the Daily Telegraph.

It’s not the first time Holmes has considered a move to the NFL.

He travelled to the US in 2016 with North Cowboys star Jason Taumalolo to trial in front of scouts and agents, where a number of NFL teams reportedly expressed interest in Holmes.

The speculation has divided rugby league fans.
