Rumours swirl David Beckham paid off Geelong football player’s $280,000 mortgage

Rumours are swirling that David and Victoria Beckham once paid off a Geelong Cats star’s $280,000 mortgage in exchange for his hotel suite with uninterrupted views of the British Open.

And AFL star Tom Hawkins, who plays for the same Victorian side as the unidentified player, claimed this week the the extraordinary story is in fact ‘100 per cent true.’

With the golf championship currently underway at the Carnoustie Golf Links in Scotland, the rumours began on Thursday when radio host Seb Costello discussed the claims on Triple M’s Hot Breakfast.

‘There’s one room that everybody wants and that’s the suite that has the best views of the 18th green,’ Seb explained, referring to a famous room at the four-star Carnoustie Golf Hotel.

‘Well, apparently, the wife of a [Geelong] Cats player organised the surprise of a lifetime. Booked the whole thing. She booked the room, flights over to Scotland and tickets to The Open. How good’s that?’

In order to stay in the suite – which goes for $2,330 per person, per night during the golf tournament – guests reportedly have to book up to five years in advance.

Was it worth it? A rumour is doing the rounds in AFL circles that David and Victoria made an unidentified footy player and his wife an offer they couldn't refuse, by giving them $280,000 in exchange for their exclusive hotel suite at the Carnoustie Golf Hotel (pictured) in Scotland

But, as the story goes, David and Victoria stepped in at the last minute and made the unidentified Australian footballer an offer he couldn’t refuse.

Seb continued: ‘The hotel manager contacted the player and said, “I’ve got a question for you. How much do you have left on your mortgage?” And the player says $280,000.

‘So the manager says, “We are prepared to pay you $280,000 if you give up the suite with views of the 18th green”.’

According to Seb, the player received the money into his bank account two days later courtesy of ‘Mr and Mrs Beckham’.

Later in the show, Cats player Tom Hawkins called in and verified that the story is ‘100 per cent true’, insisting that Posh and Becks did pay his teammate’s mortgage in exchange for the hotel suite.

‘I got told it on Thursday [last week] and then played golf with a few mates on Saturday,’ Tom said. ‘And then somehow, by Monday, I’m receiving messages from different mates right across the game asking me if the story was true.’

Tom continued: ‘I’m led to believe the story is 100 per cent true, but I got it off a teammate.’

When asked for more details by the Triple M presenters, the 29 year-old sportsman added that it was Harry Taylor had told him the story.

‘He has the connections and I’m informed that it is true,’ Tom added. ‘But unfortunately, [the source is] not one of my close mates.’

However, this isn’t the first time a similar rumour has done the rounds.

In 2011, there were reports a bride and groom had their $460,000 mortgage paid off when Victoria wanted to use their wedding venue for son Cruz’ christening.

But a spokesperson for the establishment in question, Cameron House, rubbished the claims.
