Russian man risks his life trying to free bear with its head stuck in a giant tin in Yakutia region

A Russian man risked his life trying to save a brown bear with its head stuck in a giant tin while it was scavenging for food.

But before he could free it from the container the wild beast ran off into the forest and has still not been found.

The man risked got dangerously close to the young brown bear and used what appears to be a bicycle tyre to try and pull the container off the wild animal’s head.

The Russian man tried to yank the plastic tub off the bear’s head with a bike tyre

After hooking the tyre round the green tub, he tried to yank it off the bear’s head.

Despite the bear running off the man then chases after the stricken animal and tries again to hook the tyre round its head.

At one point he scurries away from the agitated bear as it runs towards him still trapped in the container.

He makes four attempts to free the predator before it runs off into the forest while his friend films the rescue bid.

The video was shot in Russia’s coldest Yakutia region, also known as the Sakha Republic, it is believed.

They call the wild animal ‘Misha’ – a common name for bears in Russia – as they seek to show their friendly intentions.

At first the bear appeared willing to let the man try and help remove the tightly jammed canister – but later becomes more nervous and his best efforts failed.

One of the men called out ‘Misha, Misha, wait…’ as the animal walks away.

The bear did not growl but appears in pain.

Had the man managed to remove the container, he could have been in mortal danger from an attack by the bear.

Now a search is on for the animal with Russian hunters ordered by the regional government to look out for the stricken bear.

The animal cannot see, eat or use its sense of smell while its head is struck in the container.

If found, it will be sedated then the canister removed.

The bear is believed to have been scavenging for food – possibly in a rubbish dump – when its head became wedged.

It is not known what was inside the container that attracted the animal.

The local Minister of Ecology ordered all rangers in the area to be on the lookout to save the bear which cannot eat while its face is wedged inside the large tin, reported The Siberian Times.

Anna Nalimova, a spokeswoman ministry, said: ‘The Ministry’s hunting department sent a note to all inspections in the south of Yakutia, asking them to figure out where the video was filmed.’

However, the region is almost as large as India so finding the bear may prove hard.

By early today the bear had not been found and the authorities were widening the search.

There have been many reports in Yakutia this year about bears coming to explore rubbish sites.

Earlier this summer hunters had to be called to protect a children’s camp under siege from a brown bear with two cubs.

Two years ago, a polar bear had to be sedated to remove a tin can that became wedged to its mouth.

The cases have raised concerns about the danger to wild animals of man’s pollution from throwaway containers.
