Sadiq Khan compares Donald Trump’s language to ISIS

Sadiq Khan last night accused Donald Trump of using ISIS-style language by calling for a ‘total and complete shutdown’ of Muslims entering the United States.

The Mayor of London said the American President is playing the same ‘game’ as the terror group by painting the world as a clash between civilizations.

And he insisted he is an ‘unwilling participant’ in his long-running feud with the US leader, who berated the London Mayor over Twitter for his response to the Westminster terror attack.

Speaking at a fringe event at the Labour Party conference, Mr Khan tore into the US President over his attempt to impose a Muslim travel ban.

And he dismissed assurances that he would be exempt from the ban if it is imposed, saying it is insulting to be singled out as exceptional.

He told the Guardian Live event: ‘My view was firstly “I’m not exceptional” and secondly “think about what you are saying”.

‘Because what you are saying is not dissimilar to what Daesh or so-called IS says.

‘They say that there is a clash of civilisations, it is not possible to be a Muslim and a Westerner, and the west hates us. And you are inadvertently playing their game, you are helping them.’

He said Mr Trump’s ban on travellers gave the ‘wrong impression’ of the religion and plays into the terror group’s bid to divide the community.

He said: ‘I’m a Westerner, but also a very proud Muslim. There are some people who want to divide our communities – I’m not going to let them.

The Labour mayor said Mr Trump is ‘ignorant’ about Muslims and repeated his call for his state visit to Britain to be cancelled.

Theresa May extended the invitation soon after Mr Trump moved into the White House, but it has been long delayed amid reports the US President does not want to be greeted by mass protests.

Mr Khan said: ‘I think at a time when the President of the United States is doing and saying so many things that we disagree with, the idea of just rolling out the red carpet and having a state visit is wrong.’

He said he is happy to ‘educate’ the US President about Islam.

In the same fringe event, the London Mayor admitted Brexit would not be a disaster for London as he told Labour members ‘don’t believe the hype’.

The London Mayor appeared to dismiss his own dire warnings about the impact of the historic vote to quit the EU.

Mr Khan has been a vocal advocate of a second referendum and claimed repeatedly Labour could derail last year’s vote.

He claimed today the ‘goalposts have moved’ and said he doubted whether Theresa May’s version of Brexit would ever come to pass.

Asked if he believed London was in ‘real trouble’, Mr Khan replied ‘no’ and later added: ‘Don’t believe the hype’.

Asked if Brexit means Brexit, Mr Khan said: ‘Let’s wait and see. I think the goalposts have moved.’

Do you ever feel London is in real trouble because of Brexit? ‘No’ and later added: ‘Don’t believe the hype.’
