SAG Awards 2019 winners: Complete list

With a leading four nominations, A Star Is Born was hotly tipped to win big at the 25th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards at The Shrine Auditorium in LA.

But Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s hit movie was snubbed once again as Black Panther took home the top honor on Sunday, while the A Star Is Born cast went home empty handed.

Black Panther’s leading man Chadwick Boseman took the lead, as the Marvel movie’s cast got on stage to accept their trophies for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.

Chadwick honored the groundbreaking superhero film with a stirring speech about being given the chance to ‘create a world that exemplified a world that we wanted to see’ even when the industry odds were stacked against them.

Top honors: Black Panther won Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. Above Sterling K. Brown, Angela Bassett, Lupita Nyong’o, Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Danai Gurira, and Andy Serkis are seen from left to right

‘To be young, gifted, and black, we all know what it’s like to be told that there is not a place for you to be featured, yet you are young, gifted, and black,’ he began.

‘We know what it’s like to be told, to say there’s not a screen for you to be featured on, a stage for you to be featured on. We know what it’s like to be the tail and not the head. We know what it’s like to be beneath and not above.

‘And that is what we went to work with every day. Because we knew not that we would be around during awards season or that it would make a billion dollars.

‘We knew we had something special that we wanted to give the world, that we could be full human beings in the roles that we were playing. That we could create a world that exemplified a world that we wanted to see.

‘We knew that we had something that we wanted to give and to come to work with every day and to solve problems with this group of people every day, with this director. That is something that I wish all actors would get the opportunity to experience. If you get to experience that, you will be a fulfilled artist.’

Veteran actor Alan Alda was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

The MASH star was welcomed onto the stage by fellow legend Tom Hanks, who commended Alda for ‘not just for his decades of work and praise worthy credits but for how he has shown us all who we are and what we all can be.’

Alda thanked the ‘brotherhood and sisterhood of actors’ he gets to call his peers.

‘I see more than ever now how proud I am to be a member of our brotherhood and sisterhood of actors,’ he began. ‘When we get a chance to act, it’s our job, at least in part, to get inside a character’s head and to search, to search for a way to see life from that person’s point of view, another person’s vision of the world.

‘And then to let an audience experience that. It may never have been more urgent to see the world through another person’s eyes than when a culture is divided so sharply, actors can help at least a little just by doing what we do.

‘I know there’s a lot of our fellow union members that are not here or are not working as frequently as they might want to, and that was certainly the case for me for a long time. And you wonder if you got it. You wonder if you’re any good ‘cuz what we’re doing is we’re just liars up there, you know, and we’re wondering if people are buying it.

‘You know, everybody is just a job away. For me it was Arrested [Development]. I am very, very grateful to that show. I just want to say to the people at home and not working as frequently as they want, you’re just one job away. You’re plenty talented. Hang in there.’

The SAG Awards are considered a reliable predictor for who will take home Oscar gold come February 24.

The best picture winner at the Academy Awards has always first been nominated for best ensemble by the SAG Awards except in 1996, when Braveheart won best picture, and last year, when Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water overcame the SAG omission to win best picture. The actors guild instead awarded Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri its top prize.

Actors easily make up the largest percentage of the academy, so their preferences can have an especially large impact on the Oscar race.
