Locked in a prison cell and estranged from his lover, Salim Mehajer has turned to a trusted person with years of experience in the courtroom to fight his latest legal battle – himself.

The disgraced property developer and former western Sydney deputy mayor launched a bid to strike a deal with police over a restraining order taken out for his now ex-girlfriend Missy Tysoe.

Dressed in a prison green polo shirt and sporting a fresh haircut, Mehajer, 34, appeared before a magistrate via video link from a Silverwater prison cell on Thursday.

Instead of bringing in a lawyer, the former politician defended himself. He scribbled down copious notes, cradled his chin in his hands thoughtfully and spoke to a judge in legalistic language

‘I wanted to chat to the prosecution if we can come to some terms,’ Mehajer told Magistrate Allison Hawkins.’It’s just the particulars I don’t agree with.’

Mehajer was directed into private discussions with a police officer about what he had an issue with.

Police are investigating Ms Tysoe’s claims Mehajer threatened and assaulted her as recently as last October.

She allegedly had to seek medical attention as the result of one incident.

Auburn-based police officers recently charged Mehajer with breaching the AVO via a call to one of his sisters about Ms Tysoe.

The court heard previously heard that the sibling told Ms Tysoe: ‘I don’t know man, he was saying all this stuff about loving you, I felt sorry for him.’

The incident allegedly occurred between 9pm on December 27 and 3pm the next day.

The couple have been in a relationship since January 2017 however Ms Tysoe has deleted all traces of Mehajer from Instagram and an AVO has been taken out on her behalf

Police were due to investigate recordings of Mehajer’s phone calls to his family members from the Metropolitan Remand Centre in recent days.

Mehajer, who has been remanded in custody for months over separate electoral fraud matters, is expected to apply for bail next Thursday.

Mehajer had been in a relationship with Ms Tysoe for three years, following the breakdown of his infamous marriage to former wife, Aysha.

Ms Tysoe didn’t appear in court, instead sharing video on Instagram of herself lapping up the summer sun and going for a swim.
