Horrific footage has emerged of a monster crocodile leaping out of the water and snatching a dog as his helpless owner watches on.

Aurukun Indigenous Knowledge Centre shared the heartbreaking moment the beloved dog, called Ben, was swallowed whole.

In the footage, three dogs can be seen splashing around in the water at Watson River, Queensland, on October 19.

Moments later, the footage turns grim when a saltwater crocodile jumps out of the water and captures the dog.

The two other dogs jump and bark while the owner yells in fear for the dog to get out of the water.

‘Ben get out,’ he could be heard saying.

The heartbreaking footage then cuts to the water again where the large crocodile could be seen swimming away after its meal.

‘Oh no, Benny,’ the owner said as his voice breaks.

The centre co-ordinator Noel Waterman told Cairns Post that this video should be a warning to pet owners who let them play in rivers during high tide.

‘Crocs seem to be more camouflaged at this time,’ he said.
