A journalist has revealed how NRL star Sam Burgess called him early in the morning and delivered a 10-minute long abusive rant over the phone.

Rugby league journalist Paul Kent detailed the explosive phone call from Burgess during an appearance on the Matty Johns Podcast.

‘I had a big one [bad phone call] last year with Sam Burgess when all the drama was happening at Souths at finals time,’ he said.

‘I’m a bit of a night owl and at six o’clock in the morning I’m not much good. The phone rings and for 10 minutes it was just abuse.’

Kent said he was confused about the call as he struggled to remember his own reporting, adding it hadn’t specifically been about Burgess.

Johns then questioned Kent about whether the pair have mended their relationship and recalled the moment Burgess visited for the podcast.

The South Sydney captain told Johns he had a ‘yarn’ with Kent upstairs, leading Johns to ask Kent when the two men overcame their differences.

‘What happened is we had a blue and he rang me and he ended it pretty quickly with a quick statement,’ Kent said.

Johns interjected and questioned whether it was along the lines of ‘go f*** yourself’, to which Kent replied ‘something like that’.

Kent said Burgess called five minutes later and ‘doubled up’, before ending the conversation with further profanities.

By the third phone call, Kent said Burgess apologised for his choice of words.

Kent told the prop he was a ‘big boy’ and it wouldn’t be an issue for the pair going forward.

Kent said he understood why Burgess was emotional during the tough time and he doesn’t hold a ‘grudge’ over the incident.
