Sam Newman is BARRED from AFL final – despite two attempts to get into the ground and spending hundreds of dollars in an attempt to get through the gate

  • Controversial AFL media personality Sam Newman is barred from MCG lounge
  • Newman was not allowed to enter the MCG members area during semi-final
  • He chronicled his attempts to gain entry into the lounge through Twitter
  • The MCG members and dining lounges have strict dress policies

Sam Newman chronicled his battle to gain entry in an AFL semi-final in Melbourne after being barred from entry into the member’s area.

The former Geelong player and long time AFL media personality was barred from entering the MCG’s members Long Room during the Geelong and West Coast match up in Melbourne on Friday.

‘Well I’ve come to the football for the first time in, well a long time, up to the members (Long Room), 50 year member, and I’ve been stopped at the door,’ Newman said on his Twitter account.

‘You’ve got to have a tie and a (collared) shirt to get in.’

Newman was wearing a blazer but only a t-shirt underneath which goes against the MCG’s membership lounge dress standards.

‘They’re the rules, I’m glad I’m a member of a club that has to have your properly dressed to get in,’ Newman said.

Later he posted a follow up video after buying a tie and a Geelong supporters shirt, with a collar, for $200 total.

Unfortunately for Newman the Geelong supporters shirt also did not meet the dress standards for the members lounge.

‘I’m so glad I am part of this club that has these strict dress standards because it keeps the riff-raff like me, people like me, it keeps them out,’ Newman said.

In a last ditch effort to gain entry Newman went to a nearby men’s fashion shop to buy a proper dress shirt with collar but that still didn’t do the trick.

‘$325 dollars later, this is the third shirt I’ve purchased, see it’s got sort of a white collar, but no still can’t get in,’ he said.

Eventually Newman updated his followers from the top tier of the MCG after finally getting entry into the general admission section of the ground.

‘Nothing in this world takes the place of persistence,’ he said as the game went on behind him.

The MCG website clearly outlines the acceptable dress standards for entry into the Long Room and Members Dining Room.

‘The dress standard for males in the Long Room and Dining Room is a suit or tailored jacket, shirt, tie, slacks (tailored chinos acceptable) and shoes,’ the website states.
