Sam Smith steps out for coffee after spending ‘£12million on new north London home’… as star comes out as non-binary following ‘lifetime struggle’ with gender

Sam Smith stepped out for a coffee on Wednesday afternoon following their purchase of a new £12million property in an upmarket north London enclave.

The singer picked up refreshments from local cafe Les Filles during their latest outing in the exclusive suburb, where celebrity neighbours include actor Jude Law and singer Liam Gallagher.

Sporting a white T-shirt and loose fitting black jeans, Smith, 27, looked relaxed while grabbing a drink, shortly after snapping up a five-bedroom, Grade II listed home in Hampstead, north London.

The home is believed to be a stones throw from an 18th century townhouse purchased by the multimillionaire singer in 2015, next door to the sprawling property formerly owned by Culture Club star Boy George.

A source told The Sun: ‘Sam is one of the biggest pop-stars in the country, and has been handsomely rewarded as a result.

‘But they have also been very wise with their money, had sound financial advice and invested sensibly in bricks and mortar.

‘The new property is absolutely stunning and boasts a very colourful history.’

Smith’s latest appearance comes after the star came out as non-binary in what they called a ‘lifetime of being at war with my gender.’

The Too Good at Goodbyes singer was met with thousands of mostly supportive comments, along with some detractors who questioned the need to change pronouns, an increasingly common practice both within and outside of the LGBTQ community.

‘Today is a good day so here goes. I’ve decided I am changing my pronouns to THEY/THEM,’  Smith wrote on Twitter and Instagram.

‘After a lifetime of being at war with my gender I’ve decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and out.’

Smith said they were excited and privileged for the support, adding that they’ve been ‘very nervous’ about the announcement because they ‘care too much about what people think’ but finally decided to go for it.

‘Love you all,’ Smith tweeted, adding they’re scared ‘but feeling super free right now. Be kind.’

The singer noted: ‘P.s. I am at no stage just yet to eloquently speak at length about what it means to be non binary but I can’t wait for the day that I am. So for now I just want to be VISIBLE and open.’

Smith first rose to fame in 2012 after featuring on Disclosure’s breakthrough single ‘Latch’.

The song peaked at number 11 in the UK chart and Smith has since been a firm fixture of the UK music scene.

Smith won an Oscar in 2016 for the song Writing’s on the Wall, from the James Bond thriller Spectre and received global attention in 2015 by winning four Grammy Awards, including best new artist Grammy and record of the year for Stay With Me.
