Sans Souci home with rainbow roof up for auction

Sydney man John Hall painted every tile on the roof of his fibro home, one at a time, back in 1997 in a touching tribute to his late wife.

Mr Hall painted the tiles so that the house could ‘be seen from heaven so (wife) Berta can look down and see how much I love her’, he said at the time, Domain reported.

But Mr Hall died last year and now the property with the multi-coloured roof, located in Sans Souci, south of Sydney, is going under the hammer – the final chapter in this love story.

Mr Hall lifted each roof tile of the Riverside Drive home and painted it one of four colours before he replaced it.

After his wife’s death his son came to live with him in the beachfront property.

The couple met as children, married in 1942 and first lived in the side verandah in Berta’s family home.

The couple bought the home 16 years before the Kogarah woman died and after she had a double kidney transplant.

‘Berta had 16 years enjoying life here, looking out over the water,’ Mr Hall said, according to the publication.

There was a sign outside the home that was knocked down because of wind that read ‘our Berta’s corner’.

On the anniversary of her death, October 18, he would have a poem placed in the memoriam column of The St George and Sutherland Shire Leader.

Since Mr Hall’s death last year the property has been under the care of the New South Wales Trustee & Guardian, who listed the property yesterday.

The four-bedroom home has stellar bay views and can be built into a large home, subject to council approval.

The home, with two bathrooms, is across from the beach and has a separate living and dining room.
