Sante by ENJO founder reveals why you only need WATER to remove makeup

The Australian CEO of skincare brand Santé by ENJO has shared why using her revolutionary makeup remover pads with nothing but water is secret to glowing skin – and how reducing chemicals in the home has improved her family’s health.  

Barb de Corti was on an Austrian holiday with her son Mark 28 years ago who suffered from severe asthma and noticed it improved dramatically. 

After a few days she identified the link; it was due to the accommodation being cleaned without a single chemical.

‘Naturally I removed chemicals from my home and then the next step became clear – to remove chemicals from my skincare,’ Barb told FEMAIL. 

Santé by ENJO was first born from the gentle yet effective fibre technology used to clean the wounds of patients in hospital to reduce scarring and bacteria. 

‘Research revealed that water and the fine fibres performed better and were less painful for patients and due to this working so well we decided to produce a skincare range to remove bacteria that causes acne but also to remove makeup,’ Barb said.

Barb de Corti: What are the nasties to look out for in skincare? 

There are too many to name! 

Parabens, Siloxanes… anything that is synthetic or artificial should always raise a red flag. 

These are made up of hundreds to thousands of different ingredients not listed on the label, so you are never sure what you are actually being exposed to. 

Commonly found in cosmetic and skincare products, these chemicals are also known to mess with your hormones and are harmful to fish and other wildlife when dispensed down the drain and into our waterways.

When it comes to the average skincare routine, Barb says women tend to make three main mistakes: over-cleansing, over-exfoliating and double cleansing.  

‘Over cleansing with products which just cleanse the surface and don’t offer a deep clean. In contrast, over exfoliation is also a massive problem, as it leaves micro-tears on the skin. This leaves skin exposed for the bacterium porphyrin to enter, which causes acne and pimples,’ she said.

‘Thirdly, ‘double cleansing’ is great marketing but not necessary if you use the right products. Your skin is either clean or it isn’t! What companies are saying is that their products are not working hard enough the first time around!’

As for Barb herself, she keeps to a simple less is more approach.     

‘I always use good quality sunscreen and moisturiser without fail every day. I cleanse after my morning run with our Face Cleanser,’ she said.

‘In the evening I take the day off with our makeup remover, exfoliate every other day with our Exfoliator fibre and finish with my favourite eye cream and serum – Augustinus Bader.’
