Sara Huegill’s shoplifting charge has been quashed on mental health grounds after she was accused of stealing a pair of $2,500 leather pants.

The wife of Australian swimming champion Geoff Huegill appeared at Byron Bay Local Court on Friday, where the single charge against her was dropped.

The charge related to allegations the 35-year-old stole the pants from a boutique clothing store  while shopping on Mother’s Day this year.

During a court hearing in June, a lawyer acting on behalf of Ms Huegill applied for an adjournment so she could undergo a mental health examination, known as a Section 32.

‘Sara deeply regrets the incident and apologises unreservedly,’ her lawyer said in a statement in May.

‘Sara has made good progress recently in being treated for issues related to anxiety and depression and acknowledges this is a setback.

‘She has asked for privacy and understanding for her family at this time.’

More to come.
