Sarah Burton is set to receive Trailblazer Award for ‘championing UK-wide craftsmanship’

Sarah Burton OBE has been announced as the recipient of this year’s prestigious Trailblazer Award.

The mother-of-three, 45, who is the current Creative Director of Alexander McQueen, is set to be honoured by the British Fashion Council for being a visionary and championing UK-wide craftsmanship.

The annual awards give recognition to those who’ve had the biggest impact on the global fashion industry over the past twelve months. 

At the ceremony which takes place at The Royal Albert Hall in London, Sarah will be noted for her work to date and influence on the industry. 

She has had a huge impact on everyday style and formal wear, even designing the dress worn by the Duchess of Cambridge at her wedding in 2011.

Announcing Sarah as the recipient of the award, the British Fashion Council said that she has given a ‘personal’ approach to Alexander McQueen’s catwalk shows. 

They wrote: ‘As the Creative Director of Alexander McQueen, Burton will be honoured for some of her most personal and visionary work to date through her narrative approach to the Alexander McQueen S/S20 show and for her extraordinary work in championing UK-wide craftsmanship, highlighting skills important to the brand and essential to the industry.’

Manchester-born Sarah, worked alongside Alexander McQueen for 14 years before the founder’s tragic death in 2010.

She was given the role as head of womenswear design at the brand in 2000, just two years after completing her studies at Central St Martins in London.

The Fashion Awards founded in 1989, have become an inspirational event for an industry that impacts the entire globe.

This year’s star-studded lineup also sees Naomi Campbell honoured as a fashion icon and Giorgio Armani praised for outstanding achievements.

Sarah Burton has received acknowledgement for her creativity within the fashion industry in the past, being awarded an Order of the British Empire in 2012 and the award for the Designer of the Year at the British Fashion Awards in 2011.  

The 45-year-old supervises all collections in the Alexander McQueen portfolio and counts designing Pippa Middleton’s bridesmaid dress among one of her other most memorable moments in fashion.
