Sarah Carter: Rising political star is found dead aged 45 – just days after returning from Save the Children charity trip

  • Sarah Carter, 45, was found dead on Tuesday
  • Police are not treating her death as suspicious

A rising political star and three-time mayor has been found dead in her home at just 45 years old.

Victoria Police confirmed the death of Sarah Carter, 45, on Tuesday.

It said her death is not being treated as suspicious.

She was a notable member of the Australian Labor Party and was voted as mayor of Maribyrnong, a suburb in west Melbourne, three times – in 2011, 2020 and 2022.

Ms Carter was also a ‘passionate advocate’ of the arts and pushed for programs including the Creative West project, formerly known as NeXT, and Festival City.

She received multiple awards since she was first elected to the council in 2008 and was serving her fourth consecutive term.

Many Labor insiders reportedly believed Ms Carter would become an MP as she was well-liked within Melbourne and Canberra political circles.

Ms Carter had only returned from her holiday to ‘remote communities on Santo and Malekula Islands in Vanuatu’ with charity Save the Children earlier this week.

‘Vanuatu is recognised as one of the most vulnerable countries in the world to the impacts of climate change and disasters and we got to witness firsthand the impact of resilience and adaptation initiatives benefiting communities through Australia’s bilateral and multilateral development programs,’ she said of the trip.

Labor MP Tim Watts told The Age Ms Carter ‘lived a life of values and of service’.

‘Her energy was limitless and was exhausting for those of us trying to keep up,’ he said.

‘I had the privilege of seeing first hand the impact that Sarah had as a councillor and mayor in Melbourne’s west, as an international aid and development advocate and as a friend. She had an impact on so many people’s lives.

‘She gave so much of herself and wanted to give so much more. She’s been taken from us far too soon. It’s a terrible loss to our community and our country.’

The cause of Ms Carter’s death is not yet known.

More to come.
